7 Warning Signs Your Laptop Needs Repair (Before It Dies Completely)
Most people don’t bring a laptop in until it’s already dead. By then, you’re often paying for a new hard drive and data recovery, when a $60 fan clean six weeks earlier would’ve sorted it. If you’re anywhere from Manly to Mona Vale, Dee Why to Avalon, here’s what we look for first — and the quick test you can run yourself before deciding it’s worth a trip in.
It takes forever to boot up
Went from a 20-second startup to three minutes? Usually one of three things: the hard drive is nearly full (or failing), too many apps are set to launch automatically, or the battery can’t deliver stable power at start-up.
Quick test: check how much free space is left on your main drive. Under 10% free will noticeably slow a laptop down — that’s an easy fix, not a repair.
It runs hot, or the fan won’t stop
Nine times out of ten this is dust build-up choking the internal fan and vents — especially in laptops that live near a beach or get used outdoors. Left long enough, it shortens battery life and eventually stresses the motherboard.
Quick test: feel the air coming from the vents while it’s under load. If it’s barely warm despite the fan screaming, airflow is blocked, not the component underneath.
The battery drains fast, or only works plugged in
Batteries degrade — that’s normal wear. But dropping from 100% to 20% in under an hour, or shutting off instantly when unplugged, means the battery itself has failed. It’s one of the cheapest, most worthwhile repairs there is on a laptop that’s otherwise fine.
Quick test: check battery health in your system settings (Mac: About This Mac → System Report → Power; Windows: run powercfg /batteryreport). Under 80% capacity, it’s time.
You hear clicking, grinding or whirring from inside
On older laptops with a traditional spinning hard drive (not SSD), clicking or grinding is a serious red flag — the drive is physically failing and can stop working at any time, taking your files with it.
Quick test: none — if you hear this, back up everything today and get it looked at. This is the one sign that genuinely can’t wait.
The screen flickers, has lines, or dims randomly
Usually a faulty display cable — worn out from years of opening and closing the lid — or a failing backlight. Less commonly, a graphics card fault.
Quick test: gently move the screen back and forth a few degrees while watching for the flicker to change. If it does, it’s almost certainly the cable — a straightforward, affordable repair.
Programs freeze or crash constantly
Occasional freezing is normal. Constant crashing, especially with basic programs like your browser or email, usually points to malware, corrupted system files, or a drive that’s simply out of healthy space.
Quick test: restart in Safe Mode (Windows) or Safe Boot (Mac). If it runs fine there, something you’ve installed is the culprit, not the hardware.
Wi-Fi keeps dropping out, even close to the router
If every other device in the house holds a stable connection but your laptop keeps dropping out, the issue is the laptop’s Wi-Fi adapter or drivers — not your internet.
Quick test: connect another device to the same spot at the same time. If it stays connected while your laptop drops, the fault is local to the laptop.
Repair or replace? A quick rule of thumb
If the laptop is under 4–5 years old and it’s one isolated fault — battery, screen, fan, Wi-Fi — repair almost always makes more financial sense than replacing. If you’re looking at a failing hard drive on a laptop that’s already 6+ years old and slow for other reasons too, it’s worth an honest opinion before spending on a repair that just delays the inevitable. We’ll always tell you straight which one makes sense for your situation, not just push a sale.
Common questions
How much does a laptop repair cost in Sydney?
Depends entirely on the fault — a battery or Wi-Fi adapter is a much smaller job than a screen or motherboard repair. We always diagnose and quote before doing any work, so there’s no surprise bill.
Can you fix laptops on the same day?
Many common faults (battery, Wi-Fi, slow performance, malware) can be turned around same-day. Screen and hardware replacements usually depend on parts availability.
